Size: 1056m²

The client brief for the project was to deliver a new ten-learning-space block at Pukekohe High School, marking the first stage of a campus-wide redevelopment masterplan. The learning block was intended to provide the school’s first flexible learning environments, allowing them to explore collaborative pedagogies.

Our design response focused on creating a differentiated, flexible learning environment aimed at maximizing the positive impact of the five factors in the Dunn and Dunn learning styles model. This model addresses individual learning preferences through elements such as environmental, emotional, sociological, physiological, and psychological stimuli.

The spatial planning for the new learning building provides a flexible learning environment that allows the school to move in and explore contemporary learning modalities. Both floors provide five learning spaces, each with access to a breakout space. The learning spaces are separated by flexible dividers, allowing for direct instruction and various collaborative learning group sizes, ranging from two to five classroom sizes, while maintaining visual connectivity. Each floor has access to a project space and covered outdoor learning spaces, allowing for hands-on learning connected to the outdoor environment.

Additionally, the design response is underpinned by cultural narrative drivers that seek to create a sense of belonging and wonder through references to local people, place, and culture. By integrating these cultural elements into the design, we aim to foster an environment where all students feel connected and inspired, enhancing their overall learning experience.

The project contributes to the community by providing a modern, adaptable educational facility that supports the evolving needs of students and educators. By fostering a collaborative and inclusive learning environment, the new block encourages engagement and participation, promoting a sense of community and well-being. The integration of cultural narratives strengthens ties to local heritage, instilling pride and a sense of belonging among students.

Cultural advisors ensured that Māori cultural narratives were respectfully integrated into the design. Their guidance on the historical and cultural significance of Pukekohe influenced various design elements, enhancing the building’s connection to its context and community.
