Leith Place redevelopment – Tokoroa
The catalyst for change is underway with designs released for the redevelopment of Leith Place in Tokoroa. Located on the edge of State Highway One, thousands of motorists pass by every day without a reason to stop. But that is about to change.
DCA won the contract in June 2017 with a challenge to have the Civic space completed by Xmas 2018. DCA launched into a series of workshops with the client and stakeholders to understand the community aspirations. The redevelopment references the history, culture and geography of Tokoroa with two activation points, positioned north and south on the site.
The design features a new Visitor Centre with a walkable roof and viewing point over 9 metres above the ground. The multi-functional design will also provide a performance space in the form of an outdoor amphitheatre for up to 500 people. Another key feature will be the beautiful carved talking poles which are currently scattered around the town. They are hard to appreciate without taking the time to explore, so we have clustered a dozen together to create a talking pole forest and public art installation within Leith Place. When completed, this transformational project will be a sure stop for many motorists.
