Making Tokoroa Great Again.
In 2017 South Waikato District Council commissioned DCA Architects of Transformation to undertake the redevelopment of Leith Place.
Located on the edge of State Highway One, thousands of motorists pass by every day without a reason to stop. “But that is about to change” says Managing Director Darryl Church. The re-developed town square has collated some of the beautiful carved ‘Talking Poles’ and curated them as a public art installation. The other feature is the design of the public toilets. While functional, the placement and expression has raised them above the mundane.
“We have placed the toilets in the layout of the Southern Cross as a navigation reference to the many cultures that have settled in Tokoroa” says Darryl.
Timber shrouds with polished discs extend up to nine metres above the ground and are linked with a large roof shelter. “We expect the public square to be a very popular spot for the locals, but more importantly, a nice spot for motorists to stop for a break during the holiday period”.
